Conservative Leadership Race.

It has been exactly one week since Boris Johnson was forced to resign following the resignation of 2 of his most senior cabinet members. The race is now on to appoint his successor. The question that everyone is asking is: will the Uk have its first Prime Minister of colour, and will it be arrived at by him or her having the majority support of the party or by some backroom horse trading?

Already worrying signs have emerged from Westminster of a “Stop Rishi” campaign. Such campaigns are usually reserved for the opposition; rarely ever blue on blue. Accusations of dark arts, promises of positions in the new cabinet in return for the endorsement / votes from the outward going candidate to the ones who remain, make it an even more thrilling contest and the outcome difficult to predict.

Who will emerge victorious, no one knows for sure, but Rishi Sunak, ex chancellor until he resigned over a week ago, looks like the party and bookies’ favourite followed by Penny Mordaunt. A word of caution, however- these contests tend to throw up surprises, so don’t take your eyes off of the articulate, smart and ambitious Kemi Badenoch. We could be hearing a lot more from her in the future.
